The Benefits of Concrete Floor Coatings

Floors are one of the most critical elements of any residential, commercial or industrial space.  Commercial properties, particularly, need flooring that can withstand a lot of use. Epoxy coatings are a cost-effective solution to protect your concrete floors, offering endless design options to meet your aesthetic and durability needs.

Additionally, resinous coatings are easy to clean and maintain, durable and long-lasting, and chemical and stain-resistant. These seamless surfaces are fluid-applied and installed with minimal downtime and offer slip resistance with an adjustable coefficient of friction ranges.

If your concrete floor is uncoated, a durable coating can shield it from further damage and add a layer of visual appeal and refinement. Surface preparation includes removing dirt, grime, and grease and filling in all lines, divots, and cracks. Next, the fluid coating is applied, leaving you with a durable, shiny new floor.

Why You Should Consider Concrete Floor Coatings

Among the benefits of concrete floor coatings are:

Appearance

Epoxy coatings are versatile enough to be used in residential and commercial applications. Different textures, patterns, and colors are available to match your taste and style preferences, from basic to modern-elegant. When the whole process is complete, you have a custom floor with a smooth or textured finish in the color you want.

Non-Porous and Resistant

Concrete floor coatings can handle shock, heat, chemicals, and water, making them ideal for commercial and high-traffic use. They are non-porous and provide an antimicrobial surface, suitable for hospitals, restaurants, and commercial kitchens where sanitization is a top priority. The coating surface is also resistant to chemical and biological fluids and can withstand frequent and aggressive cleaning.

Durability

Epoxy protects the underlying concrete from moisture, stains, grease, chemicals, and other damaging elements. This keeps the concrete from wearing down, cracking, or crumbling. Concrete resilient coatings won’t chip or crack and are resistant to shock, water, heat, and stains, making them the most cost-effective and durable option for residential or commercial use.

Epoxy floor coatings are shock-resistant. Impacts from heavy tools, machinery, etc., will not chip or crack the surface. Once dried, these coatings also can resist certain levels of heat. The typical heat limit of epoxy is 200 degrees, but higher-grade epoxy can withstand even higher levels of heat. Chemicals left behind will also not damage the coating. The density and depth of the layering keep chemicals from seeping through to the concrete and leaving any harmful residue.

Easy-to-maintain

Epoxy floor coatings create an easy-to-clean non-porous seamless surface. A neutral cleaner is typically all that’s needed to keep your floor in top condition. A soft bristle broom or dust mop is ideal for sweeping up dirt, sand, debris, and dust. You can also wet mop the surface with ⅓ cup of dish soap in a bucket of water. For removing stains, use 4 ounces of ammonia per gallon of water. Simply mop the stain with your cleaning solution and wait for the floor to dry. This should remove any stains that cannot be removed by a simple soap and water mop job.

Do not use acid-based cleaners like vinegar, citrus, etc., and stay away from abrasive cleaners like Ajax or Comet. Hot water and a deck brush help remove hazy films left by winter road pre-treatment compounds.

Cost-effective

Installation costs are lower than other traditional flooring options such as hardwood, tile, or vinyl. Epoxy coatings rarely need to be replaced, and maintenance costs are minimal, making them a more cost-effective option over time.

Safety

Most epoxy coatings include anti-slip additives to reduce the risk of slip and fall accidents in the workplace or at home. Epoxy coatings also increase light reflectivity, brightening work areas and improving visibility. Additionally, coatings can be applied in different patterns to create visible walkways and driveways in industrial settings.

Eco-friendly

Although a chemical compound, epoxy is an eco-friendly option as it requires few materials and rarely needs replacing. Concrete floor coatings last for many years, making them a great eco-friendly choice that is cost-effective, attractive, and easy to maintain.

Resinous epoxy coatings, polyurethane, polyaspartic, and silicone, are completely inert once they dry and catalyzed, which means they are environmentally safe. In other words, when your epoxy resin dries, it cannot contaminate the environment. The only way epoxy can be environmentally damaging is if it’s not disposed of the right way.
